When Sunderland paid Hearts £9m for Craig Gordon’s services the fee set a new British transfer record for a goalkeeper so the fact that Scottish international is now allowed to leave the club for free goes some way to showing just how the custodian’s career has nosedived in recent seasons.
The 29 year old goalie has had some injury problems in recent seasons and replacement keeper Simon Mignolet has impressed between the sticks and has probably left Martin O’Neill ready to release the Edinburgh born keeper.
Despite making just one Premier League start since February 2011 there are sure to be many prospective suitors keen to snap up Gordon and he may well end up getting a Premier League reprieve.
