It’s Sir David Beckham! Becks ‘knighted’ as Olympic Flame handed over to UK
The announcer at the Athens ceremony drew chuckles by twice introducing the former England captain as SIR David Beckham
David Beckham was inadvertently given a knighthood today as the Olympic Flame was officially handed over to Britain.
As the rain poured down on the historic Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, London 2012 officials received the Flame to take back for a 70-day tour of the UK.
But the announcer drew chuckles from Britons in the crowd by twice introducing the former England captain, who flew in specially to be part of the ancient ceremony, as SIR David Beckham.

Whilst the announcer may well have made a rather foolish mistake in Athens, twice, there is a pretty good chance that David Beckham will become Sir David Beckham in the not too distant future. If the 37 year old LA Galaxy midfielder is selected in Stuart Pearce’s Team GB squad then the chances of a knighthood grow ever nearer, especially if he guides the team to a gold medal.
