Martin Jol is reportedly set to try and take Danny Simpson to Fulham, despite his desire to stay put with Newcastle United this summer.
The Cottagers chief has targeted the 25-year-old as he bids to bring in a new right-back to rival Irishman Stephen Kelly for a first-team place next season.
And, Jol could be about to make an offer to the Magpies if he continues to drag his feet over signing a new deal with the Tynesiders.
Simpson was a regular under boss Alan Pardew last season, but with only a year remaining on his current contract, the club will look to sell him in the transfer window if he fails to sign the new one on the table.
It is thought Newcastle will increase Simpson’s wages to around £25,000, but the former Manchester United wants moving in line with the club’s biggest earners.
Right back Danny Simpson was perhaps one of Alan Pardew’s most consistent performers last term, helping the Magpies cement a very impressive fifth place finish but it seems that contract talks have gone on for far too long and now clubs are ready to make a move for the former Man United man.
Martin Jol is keen to land the 25 year old and knows that it wouldn’t take a large fee to lure the defender to Craven Cottage considering Simpson has just a year to run on his current deal.
The Salford born full back was part of the team that helped Newcastle United out of the Championship at the first time of asking and has steadily become an integral part of the first team so his request to be paid in line with the club’s big earners seems a fair one.
Last term Danny Simpson made 35 Premier League starts and would be a player that Pardew would struggle to effectively replace, indeed when the player missed the last three games of the campaign Newcastle United lost twice, results that effectively ended their top four ambitions.
