Bayern Munich plan to get over their Champions League nightmare by making a move for Javi Martinez – the Athletic Bilbao star on Manchester United and Barcelona’s radar.
Munich lost to Chelsea on penalties as they suffered Champions League despair on Saturday and the club are set to enter the market this summer.
His performances helped Bilbao to the Europa League final – dumping United out on the way – and Sir Alex Ferguson is an admirer.
Bilbao do not want to lose any of their stars this summer but Munich entering the race could spark an auction for Martinez, with around £32million thought to be the sort of price the La Liga club would hold out for.
Javi Martinez may well have outgrown his Athletic Bilbao side and therefore a large queue is forming at the central midfielder’s door and it seems that chief among those looking to sign the Spaniard are Man United and Bayern Munich and the 23 year old’s future could well depend on which side is willing to pay the £32m asking price.
Sir Alex Ferguson witnessed first hand what the battling midfielder is capable of when his Old Trafford side lost both legs of their Europa League tie to the La Liga side. The powerfully built talent may well be just the type of box to box performer the Scot is looking for.
The Premier League side may lack some steel in the centre of the park and Martinez offers bite and guile and could well be tempted by a move to join his international team-mate David de Gea at Man United.
Bayern Munich may feel the need to re-build having seen Borussia Dortmund pip the Bavarian side to the Bundesliga title in consecutive seasons and could see Martinez as a very useful addition to the Allianz Arena armoury.
