CHELSEA AXE ROBERTO DI MATTEO
ROBERTO DI MATTEO’S luck has run out at Chelsea with owner Roman Abramovich posed to axe him this week.
Despite caretaker boss Di Matteo leading Chelsea to Champions League glory, Starsport can reveal the Russian believes it was good fortune which earned the victory.
A source close to Abramovich revealed last night: “Roman thinks Di Matteo has been very, very lucky and that he made a lot of mistakes in the games he’s been in charge, with his tactics and selections.
“The statistics in the two games against Barcelona and the final show just how lucky Di Matteo was. Roman has to decide this week and he will not care what the public thinks.
“Roman did not become a billionaire worrying about public opinion – he only cares about what is right for the club.”

Well this would appear to be a fairly harsh assessment of Roberto Di Matteo’s work at the West London club. Whilst it’s true that Chelsea did indeed triumph over Bayern Munich with the aid of a penalty shoot-out he did nonetheless bring Roman Abramovich the Champions League title he has been chasing for the best part of a decade.
Di Matteo’s overall record as interim boss reads pretty well, with the Blues losing just three of the 21 games he has been in charge of the West London club. Those defeats included an away loss at champions Man City, a 2-0 home loss to Newcastle United and a sub-standard performance at Anfield that saw Chelsea thumped 4-1.
However the Italian did win the FA Cup and Champions League titles so being sacked, or more accurately, being overlooked as Roman Abramovich looks for a long term successor to Andre Villas-Boas seems a little ungrateful. The issue could of course worsen if any incoming boss doesn’t like the idea of Di Matteo remaining at the club as their assistant.
If that does occur there are of course a number of vacant Premier League posts including those at Liverpool and Aston Villa. Perhaps a return to West Brom is an option as the Hawthorns side will be looking to replace Roy Hodgson in the coming weeks.
