ARSENAL TO SWIPE TOTTENHAM TARGET JAN VERTONGHEN
JAN VERTONGHEN last night warned Tottenham to hurry up and sign him – or he will join Arsenal instead.
The Ajax captain claims he has already been shown around White Hart Lane and chairman Daniel Levy visited him in Amsterdam on Monday.
But the Belgian defender fears the deal will collapse following Spurs’ failure to win a Champions League place next season – with Ajax demanding £12.5m.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger also wants Holland’s player of the season, who’ll skipper Belgium against Montenegro tonight.
“I’ve said repeatedly that Tottenham are my first choice, but the talks haven’t progressed,” said centre-back Vertonghen, 25.
“They have shown me around, I have met all their key people and their chairman came to meet me on Monday. But Arsenal want me too. They remain a possibility if my Spurs move falls through, as Ajax are asking €15m for me.
“That is a lot of money for someone with just a year left on his contract.
“I’m sure Spurs won’t be able to pay that much after they missed out on the Champions League.”

It’s most unusual for a player to be quite so honest about matters concerning his own future but Ajax skipper Jan Vertonghen clearly has no qualms telling it ‘how it is’. His admission that Tottenham are unable or unwilling to meet the Dutch side’s valuation of the Belgian international may not impress Harry Redknapp and White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy as such a statement clearly acts as a ‘come and get me’ plea to Arsenal.
The 25 year old states that he is more than aware of Arsene Wenger’s interest and indeed this source believes that the Emirates Stadium side is set to ‘swipe’ Vertonghen from under Tottenham’s noses and that does appear to be a more realistic possibility by the day.
Quite how the Ajax man would fit into Arsene Wenger’s first team picture is yet to be made clear though. Since Per Mertesacker was sidelined with injury Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen have formed a very solid central defensive unit and as such Vertonghen may be of more use to the Gunners in his other role as a defensive midfielder.
Tottenham however would see the no nonsense Ajax man as the man to help alleviate the countless injury problems they have had at the back. Ledley King, William Gallas and Michael Dawson have all had bad luck with significant time out of the picture and Vertonghen could have been seen as an able partner for ever improving Frenchman Younes Kaboul, though this source doesn’t believe such a deal is likely to now take place.
Having already snapped up Lukas Podolski, the potential signing of Vertonghen would represent Arsenal’s second capture of the summer.
