Manchester United and Chelsea are set to battle it out for Fulham’s fleet-footed playmaker Moussa Dembele, according to The Daily Mail.
The Premier League giants are both weighing up a move for the £10 million rated Belgian, who played in Saturday’s International against England at Wembley.
Dembele has just twelve months remaining on his contract and has refused a new deal at Craven Cottage, leaving Fulham likely to cash in this summer.
United have reportedly stolen a march over their rivals by starting negotiations with the West London club over a fee and will shortly begin discussing personal terms with the 24-year-old.
Sir Alex Ferguson is a bid admirer of Dembele and needs long term replacements for creative midfielders Paul Scholes, 37, and Ryan Giggs, 38.
Chelsea meanwhile are embarking on a major rebuilding programme this summer, with Mirko Marin having already signed and big money moves for Dembele’s international teammate Eden Hazard and Porto striker Hulk expected to be completed this week. The West London club reportedly see Dembele as a replacement for Frank Lampard, 33, a role the midfielder’s agent says he’d relish.
“It fits Mousa’s ambitions perfectly to become the replacement for someone like Frank Lampard one day, just as playing in the Champions League does as well,” confirmed Rodger Linse.
Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in Dembele as a potential replacement for Luka Modric but are likely to miss out on a deal, with the Croatian to decide his future after Euro 2012.
