Diego Maradona has brushed aside speculation that Chelsea’s Champions League hero Didier Drogba is set to join join his Al Wasl side.
Chinese club Shanghai Shenua, who signed Drogba’s Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka in January, have offered the Ivorian an £8 million contract but oil-rich Al Wasl are reportedly planning to hijack the deal.
Drogba, 34, is a free agent after deciding to leave Stamford Bridge following Chelsea’s dramatic Champions League win in Munich last month.
But Maradona moved to dismiss speculation that Al Wasl will match Shenua’s £300,000 a-week offer, reports Gulf News. “If we had a large budget, then yes it is possible to attract someone like Drogba. But I don’t think the budget in mind is available here.
“I’ve read a lot about Drogba’s future and I’ve come to believe he’s on the verge of signing for that Chinese team who have offered him millions. I don’t think we can match those figures,” added the Argentine.
However, Maradona refused to completely rule out a move, continuing, “Having Drogba at Al Wasl is a dream and if it does come true it will be the best thing ever.”
Maradona is under pressure to lure a trophy signing to Dubai since taking over a year ago. He is reportedly paid an annual salary of £2.5 million and has the permanent use of a private jet. The 51-year-old believes a big signing could make all the difference, following the visit of Manchester City star Sergio Aguero.
“When my son-in-law Aguero came here to visit, I had him attend training for 20 minutes and in that time he scored five goals.
“The benefit of a strong player would really make a difference but we don’t have the environment to attract big names and it’s perhaps not imperative to attract the names mentioned.”
