Barcelona switch attention to Arsenal defender Vermaelen after reaching Silva impasse
Barcelona are considering a bid for Thomas Vermaelen after hitting a brick wall in attempts to sign Thiago Silva from AC Milan.
A list of targets Barca feel they could land includes Arsenal defender Vermaelen, despite his recent insistence that he would ‘stay at Arsenal forever’.
The Belgian especially fits the bill because of his ability to also play at left back and in midfield, but Arsenal are likely to resist any approach.

Even though the Arsenal man has committed his long term future to the North London club there must be a certain amount of apprehension whenever a Gunners man is linked with the Catalan side. After all Arsene Wenger has seen the likes of Marc Overmars, Emmanuel Petit, Thierry Henry, Alexander Hleb and Cesc Fabregas all make a similar move.
Thomas Vermaelen is certainly Wenger’s most dependable defender, though the fast improving Laurent Koscielny runs the Belgian pretty close for that title, and he is a player the Gunners can ill afford to lose.
Barcelona are in something of a transition, having lost their La Liga and Champions League crown, and their manager Pep Guardiola, things at the Nou Camp don’t look as rosy as they have for the past three or four years. At the back they have been found wanting on occasion and they lack strength in depth and clearly Carles Puyol is not getting any younger.
As this source points out, Wenger is sure to resist any offers for the 26 year old and Arsenal fans will hope that they do not lose another key player to the Catalan giants.
