Arsenal are set to restructure their wage bill to help manager Arsene Wenger land “top talent” in the transfer window, according to club chief executive Ivan Gazidis.
Gazidis confirmed his intention to reshape the club’s salary structure at an Arsenal Supporters Trust meeting and the Gunners are also expected to embark on a summer clear out in a bid to cut £23 million from the wage bill.
It appears that Ivan Gazidis may well be alluding to the need to work towards quality and not quantity. It seems perverse that Robin Van Persie is reportedly on £70k a week and the likes of Marouane Chamakh and Manuel Almunia would be on £50k-60k as this source suggests. Hence the need to trim the Arsenal squad accordingly so as to help implement a wage structure that rewards those at the top of their game with salaries that compete with other’s in the top six.
The Gunners chief executive is plotting a summer clear-out that is long overdue, so with this in mind, here are ten players Arsenal could afford to offload to help balance the books and fund higher wage offers for those who are crucial to the Gunners.
French midfielder has struggled with form and injuries in recent seasons and even when fully fit the 26 year old is unlikely to mount a successful attempt to get back up the pecking order. Therefore Wenger will look to sell the former Auxerre man this summer knowing he may not garner a great deal from a player who at one point had a great deal of promise but has made just 13 Premier League starts in the past two seasons.
