Newcastle are ready to seal a deal for FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong, 21, with a fee of around £9.5million.
Twente rejected an £8m offer but negotiations are continuing.
Meanwhile, Newcastle scout Graham Carr will watch France right back Mathieu Debuchy again this weekend.
Lille rejected a £4m bid. Chelsea and Inter Milan are also interested.

Alan Pardew worked wonders in last summer’s transfer window and appears to have the financial backing of Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley as he looks to land two top talents.
Chelsea’s initial offer for Mathieu Debuchy was fairly insulting and the Magpies, who were the first to take an interest in the Lille right back, may have to offer substantially more to snap up the French international although their cause will be helped by the fact that the player’s national, and former club, team-mate Yohan Cabaye is already at St James’ Park.
Efforts to sign Dutch striker Luuk De Jong continue and the FC Twente man has certainly outgrown his Eredivisie side and Toon Army fans will have to hope that the chase to sign the young forward does not come at the expense of either Papiss Cisse or Demba Ba who both had great seasons last term.
