Belgian international on his way to White Hart Lane.
Dutch source NOS is today reporting that Tottenham have finally agreed to sign long term target Jan Vertonghen for a fee of €12m (£9.6m). The Belgian international has been linked with a move to White Hart Lane for some weeks and there had been some concern that the axing of Harry Redknapp as Spurs boss may hinder the progress of the deal but apparently that fear was unfounded.
The North London club are in need of defensive reinforcements having seen a number of their centre back options affected by long term injuries. The likes of Michael Dawson and William Gallas have suffered in this regard and veteran Ledley King has not been offered a new Tottenham contract following the completion of his previous deal this summer.
25 year old Ajax captain Vertonghen is an experienced campaigner who helped his Amsterdam to back to back Eredivisie titles over the past two seasons and can be used either as a central defender or in a defensive midfield role.
Arsenal had been said to be keen on the Ajax man but it appears that Tottenham have won the race to snap up Vertonghen despite the lack of a manager.
