Magpies keen on veteran.
Newcastle United will turn to ageing Chelsea right-back Paulo Ferreira because their top target – Mathieu Debuchy – is heading to Stamford Bridge.
The Toon looked in pole position to complete a £7 million deal for 26-year-old Debuchy, who starred as in France’s disappointing Euro 2012 campaign.
But Chelsea have entered the race for the Lille full-back and the lure of huge wages and Champions League football has put the West London club firmly in the driving seat in the race for his signature. Chelsea see Debuchy as a direct replacement for Jose Bosingwa, who was released earlier this month.
The European Champions are also willing to listen to any offers for Ferreira and Magpies boss Alan Pardew will now turn to the Portuguese as a back-up for Danny Simpson.
The 33-year-old has played a peripheral role for the Blues in recent seasons but Pardew belives he still has something to offer at the highest level.
Ferreira has played over 200 league games for Chelsea since becoming Jose Mourinho’s first signing at Stamford Bridge in summer 2004. But the veteran, who has 61 caps for Portugal, knows his chances are likely to be limited under new boss Roberto Di Matteo and would welcome a move to the North East.
