White Hart Lane star on his way to Stamford Bridge.
CHELSEA look set to beat Real Madrid’s offer for Luka Modric after it was alleged they are preparing a £36m bid for the midfielder.
Roman Abramovich has vowed to dig deep as he wants a replacement for Frank Lampard in midfield and Tottenham’s Modric has come under the spotlight.
The midfielder looked set for a move to Real Madrid after he showed a preference for the club.
But his dreams of Spanish stardom could be at an end as the club are only able to stump up £20m for Modric.
Chelsea are hoping to lure the Croatian international away from Madrid.

Chelsea spent much of last summer trying to land Croatian international Luka Modric, and the player himself specifically requested that Tottenham allowed him to pursue a move to the West London club. However White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy turned down that request
Real Madrid had looked like snapping up Modric with Levy seemingly ready to sell the 26 year old, a decision that was perhaps easier to make after Gareth Bale signed a new long term contract to stay at the club. Now Roman Abramovich has taken the lead in the bidding war for the Tottenham midfielder.
Modric has had back to back standout seasons at Spurs and also showed great form at the Euro 2012 finals and is clearly a player that Levy wouldn’t choose to sell but having failed to secure a Champions League berth and seen Harry Redknapp axed as boss, there was always a chance that some players would be vulnerable to approaches from interesting parties.
Daniel Levy looks set to offload a number of squad players, presumably with the intention of using funds from player sales to offer to any potential new Tottenham boss a decent transfer fund. Vedran Corluka has already left for Lokomotiv Moscow and Giovani dos Santos and David Bentley are both being linked with moves to end their respective nightmare spells at the club.
