Etihad Stadium side target Bernabeu midfielder.
Gag-ing for a move: Will Manchester City save bargain Fernando from his Real Madrid hell?
With Roma not electing to take their option on the Argentine international, Roberto Mancini is ready to renew his interest in the €7m midfielder
This summer’s Real Madrid exodus is already being planned, and one of the first names expected out of the door is Argentina midfielder Fernando Gago.
Gago spent last season on loan at Roma in a topsy-turvy campaign caused by Luis Enrique trying to implement a new philosophy at the Giallorossi. The lack of success has since seen the Spaniard replaced by Zdenek Zeman, and the Olimpico club have decided against exercising their €7m option to purchase the Real Madrid midfielder./strong>

It’s unusual to read the words ‘Man City’ and ‘bargain’ uttered in the same sentence as Roberto Mancini’s side seem to revel in paying vast sums for even the most average players, £17.5m for Roque Santa Cruz being a prime example, but a move for Fernando Gago is a sensible one to consider.
The Argentine midfielder could add further strength in depth to the one area of the Etihad Stadium squad that is not chock full of talent. In terms of defensive midfield options Mancini has the likes of Gareth Barry and Yaya Toure, though both are more complete box to box performers, and Nigel de Jong.
Gago’s arrival at Man City could be all the more likely as the Real Madrid man is likely to be frozen out at Roma where he spent last term on loan, coincidentally he is to be replaced at the Stadio Olimpico by David Pizarro who will leave Eastlands to return to the Serie A side.
