Old Trafford side make offer for Portuguese international.
Joao Moutinho ‘subject of £20million Manchester United bid’
Manchester United have reportedly lodged a £20 million bid with Porto for Joao Moutinho, as manager Sir Alex Ferguson looks to reshape his midfield.
The Porto playmaker is regarded as one of the finest in Europe, and only enhanced his reputation this summer with a series of superb displays for Portugal at Euro 2012.
Sir Alex Ferguson has made no secret of his desire to bring in another creative central midfielder, but has been priced out of a number of potential targets, including PSV star Kevin Strootman and Borussia Dortmund’s Mario Gotze.
However, United believe Moutinho is an attainable target, and have reportedly opened talks with Porto earlier this week over a £20 million deal.
Joao Moutinho is seeing the benefit of his solid displays during the Euro 2012 finals with the FC Porto man being linked with a move to the Premier League this summer. Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas is keen to bring the 25 year old Portuguese midfield maestro to White Hart Lane but interest from Old Trafford may well trump that coming from the North London club.
Moutinho has had two outstanding seasons at FC Porto, clinching back to back domestic titles and winning the Europa League in the process but a move to Man United will surely appeal to the former Sporting Lisbon man, not least because he will have noted the progress of other players who have left Portugal to join Sir Alex Ferguson’s club. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson and Bebe have followed the same path, with contrasting fortunes.
Having spent over £20m to bring in Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell from Borussia Dortmund and Crewe Alexandra respectively, the Scot is still looking to beef up his Man United squad having seen local rivals Man City win the Premier League title whilst also seeing his side suffer a shock group stage Champions League exit.
A move for Moutinho may turn out to be more cost effective than a bid for long term target Luka Modric who was set for a Real Madrid move before Tottenham slapped a £35m price-tag on the Croatian international.
