City eyeing enforcer.
Manchester City are hoping to take advantage of the managerial uncertainty at Athletic Bilbao by swooping for highly-rated enforcer Javi Martinez.
The Premier League Champions are understood be to preparing a bid of £15 million for the holding midfielder.
The future of Bilbao’s outspoken manager Marcelo Bielsa is in doubt after the Argentine walked out of training this week after a row about building work at the Basque club.
City have long admired Martinez, who is a defensive midfielder but can also play at centre-half. The 23-year-old was outstanding as Bilbao marched to the Europa League final, beating Manchester United on the way.
Martinez has previously said that he is happy playing under Bielsa at Athletic but it is thought the Spain international will consider his future if the Argentine coach leaves the club.
City regard Martinez as a replacement for Nigel de Jong who is likely to be sold to Inter Milan this summer and believe the 6’3″ star could also provide valuable cover at centre-half.
