Striker set for Bundesliga.
Newcastle’s hopes of signing FC Twente forward Luuk de Jong appear to be over after the striker claimed he is only interested in a move to Borussia Monchengladbach.
The Toon have been locked in a two-way battle with the Bundesliga club for the 21-year-old who has outgrown Steve McClaren’s minnows.
Boss Alan Pardew saw a bid of £12 million for de Jong rejected by Twente last week, with the Eredivise club holding out for £16 million.
But regardless of a new offer, the Magpies are set to miss out on the young Netherlands international, who admitted he has already been in touch in Gladbach.
“I have spoken to [Gladbach coach Lucien] Favre several times,” he told Bild. “We talked about how he wanted me to play. I’m sure the way he wants to play fits perfectly with the fast pace that suits me.
“I’ve told Twente that I only want to go to Gladbach. Borussia are playing in the qualifying round of the Champions League and I want to take the next step in my career.
“The Bundesliga is one of the best leagues in Europe. To make the next step with the national team I need to go there.”
