Reds eye England striker.
Liverpool are keen on signing Tottenham forward Jermain Defoe, in what would be one of the surprise moves of the summer, it has emerged.
The Anfield club have held talks with the England striker’s representatives and are considering making an official approach to Tottenham this week.
It is understood that Spurs are prepared to listen to offers for the 29-year-old, even though he is the only senior striker currently on their books.
The north Londoners are set to conclude a deal for Man City’s Emmanuel Adebayor this week and also want to sign Brazilian star Leandro Damiao, a move which would pave the way for Defoe to leave White Hart Lane.
New Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas believes the dimunitive finisher will not fit into his preferred 4-3-3 system and appreciates that Defoe is unhappy with a role as an impact sub at this stage of his career.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is desperate to revitalise his attack ahead of the new season. The former Swansea boss has already brought in Fabio Borini but is an admirer of Defoe and believes his finishing could prove vital to the Merseysiders next season.
Reading are also interested in the striker and it is believed there are a third Premier League side also in the running.
One possible obstacle to a move is Defoe’s demand for first team football, which Rodgers cannot guarantee with Luis Suarez and Borini already at Anfield.
