Five big deals that should set the international transfer market in motion.
What might happen: Lewis Holtby to Arsenal; Alberto Aquilani to AC Milan; Rafa van der Vaart to Schalke.
Liverpool are eyeing up a shock move for Arsenal’s contract rebel Theo Walcott and could land the England winger for £15 million. Like Robin van Persie, Walcott is stalling on signing a new deal at the Emirates and his indecision could prompt Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to cash in on the England winger.
Walcott’s departure would trigger an Arsenal bid for Schalke winger Lewis Holtby. The 21-year-old German international would reportedly cost upward of £10 million but Wenger believes he has the quality to succeed in the Premier League.
Schalke may well use the money to pursue Spurs playmaker Rafa van der Vaart. The Bundesliga giants are keen to sign the Dutchman but cannot afford Spurs’ £15 million asking price. Van der Vaart is understood to be happy at White Hart Lane but would consider moving back to Germany to be closer to his wife, Sylvie.
If Walcott does arrive at Anfield, it should finally spell the end of Alberto Aquilani’s Anfield nightmare. The Italian has made around 30 appearances since arriving at Anfield three seasons ago and has spent the last two years on loan in Italy. Liverpool will allow him to join Milan for a cut-price fee.
