Reds to bid for England star.
Liverpool are preparing to test Aston Villa’s resolve with a bid for England striker Darren Bent – but must wait for Andy Carroll to leave Anfield before making a move.
New Reds’ boss Brendan Rodgers has paved the way for Carroll’s exit, with Newcastle leading the chase for the £18 million-rated forward.
Rodgers is ready to use the money to bid for Villa striker Bent and believes he can land the 28-year-old for £20 million.
Bent has been with Villa since January 2011, scoring 18 times in 38 league appearances in two seasons hampered by injuries.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland striker has one of the best goal-to-game ratios of any current Premier League striker and Rodgers believes he is exactly what his misfiring Liverpool squad needs.
The Reds finished a disappointing 8th in the Premier League last season and were criticised for their failure to finish off teams after dominating possession.
The Anfield club are undergoing an overhaul of their strike-force this summer, with Fabio Borini arriving for Roma and Carroll set to follow Dirk Kuyt out of the door.
Bent, who is yet to truly settle at a club despite his terrific goal-scoring, is thought to be keen on a move to Anfield but Villa boss Paul Lambert will fight tooth and nail to hold onto the star.
