St Mary’s side chase Ewood Park defender.
Southampton boss Nigel Adkins is making a £3.5million swoop for Blackburn’s Scott Dann.
Adkins has opened talks to land the centre-half who went down with Rovers a year after joining them from Birmingham where he also took the drop from the top flight.
The Saints chief hopes that Dann will take the escape route to the top flight – and avoid a losing survival fight – with Rovers discussing a fee and possibly willing to sell.
Dann has had to take a pay cut since Rovers went down and Saints will have to offer him his ‘old’ terms to make the move happen.

Clearly Nigel Adkins is not a superstitious man, after all targeting a defender who has been part of sides relegated from the Premier League two seasons running may make some worry about his potential for securing an unwanted hat-trick. Clearly Scott Dann is a talented and very able centre back but at the same time he was on board when both Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers’s ships were sunk.
Given that Southampton are probably many people’s favourites for the drop, such a signing may worry some Saints fans.
The 25 year old Liverpool born defender was linked with moves to sides in the top half of the top tier when he was at St Andrews’, where he formed a solid partnership with Roger Johnson. However a serious injury ruled Dann out of much of their relegation campaign but he was used prominently by Steve Kean last term.
Adkins will be keen to improve his Southampton side, who have secured back to back promotions but may find life in the Premier League an entirely different kettle of fish.
