Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov could be on his way to Russia after champions Zenit St Petersburg entered the race to sign the unsettled Bulgarian.

Berbatov, 31, is widely expected to leave Old Trafford this summer after voicing his frustration at life at Old Trafford, having fallen behind the likes of Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck in the pecking order.

The former Bulgaria international, who is United’s record signing, is available for a cut-price fee of £5m, and has attracted interest from a string of top clubs across Europe, including AC Milan, who are looking to replace Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

However, according to Russian newspaper Life Sports, Zenit have made contact with Berbatov’s representative Emil Danchev and are willing to offer the Bulgarian a two-year deal worth £3.9m a season.

Dimitar Berbatov wants first team football, something he is unlikely to get much of at Old Trafford, a move away is a distinct possibility but only if any interested party meets Sir Alex Ferguson’s valuation of the Bulgarian international.

The 31 year old has been linked with a raft of possible destinations across Europe and beyond. A move to Zenit may well tempt the former Tottenham man, who is actually in good goal-scoring form despite his lack of first team action.

In 2010/11 Berbatov finished as the Premier League’s joint leading scorer and even last term managed a very healthy total of seven goals from 12 appearances, of which only five were starts.

Whilst a move to AC Milan may well be more tempting for the stylish attacker it is perhaps more likely that the San Siro side will opt for a more youthful addition to replace PSG bound Zlatan Ibraimovic.

There is of course the outside chance that Berbatov could force his way back up the Man United pecking order, though currently he sits behind Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez.
