Newcastle are ready to abandon attempts to bring Lille full-back Mathieu Debuchy to St James’ Park – but Chelsea could yet swoop for the French international.
Both Premier League clubs have made signing a right-back a top priority this summer but it was Newcastle who looked to have won the race for Debuchy, after he was persuaded to join Toon by Les Bleus teammate Yohan Cabaye.
But Magpies boss Alan Pardew is struggling to agree a fee with Lille, with the Ligue 1 outft holding out for £8 million but Newcastle unwilling to offer above £6 million, reports the Crunchsports.
Lille have already secured a cut-price replacement in the form of exciting Troyes star Djibril Sidibe but believe the north-east outfit are undervaluing Debuchy.
Mega-rich Chelsea are now ready to hijack Newcastle’s deal and are thought to be willing to meet Lille’s asking price.
Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo is desperate for a new full-back, after releasing Jose Bosingwa last month.
The European Champions have been linked with Inter star Maicon but would prefer the 26-year-old Frenchman.
Newcastle are considering turning to Ajax flyer Gregory van der Wiel or Marseille utility man Rod Fanni if they cannot resurrect a deal for Debuchy.
The powerful right-back starred for France at Euro 2012 and is understood to have told Newcastle officials he will do everything in his power to try to force through the transfer.
