Welshman plays 74 minutes for Spurs, despite declaring himself unfit for Olympics.Gareth Bale is facing the wrath of Team GB coach Stuart Pearce after playing 74 minutes in Tottenham’s 1-1 friendly draw with LA Galaxy last night – two days before the Olympic football is due to kick-off.
The Welsh wing-wizard scored Spurs’ only goal of the night and look fully fit, despite pulling out of Team GB’s Olympic campaign three weeks ago.
The 23-year-old was a poster boy for the British Olympic Association before the games but claimed he couldn’t participate in Team GB’s push for Gold due to a bad back.
Pearce, whose side lost their only warm-up match 2-0 to Brazil on Friday, is said to be furious with Bale.
In the build-up to the Galaxy game, Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas insisted that the former Southampton left-sider would only play some part in the match, with others getting the full 90 minutes.
“The game coming up in Baltimore will be played in the heat [Spurs face Liverpool on Saturday in a match that starts at 1pm local time] – that will be a game where we need to use two different teams,” said the Portuguese tactician, according to the Daily Mirror.
“So it’s a good game for us now to give some certain players 90 minutes, or a 60-minute run.
“We also have to take into account the physical effort that the players are putting into training,” he added.
