Malaga seeking hefty fee for 27-year-old.Arsenal may be forced to give up their pursuit of playmaker Santi Cazorla, with Malaga demanding £20 million for the Spaniard.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has admitted his admiration for Cazorla, with reports this week suggesting the Spain international had agreed terms on a £16.5 million deal with the north Londoners.
But, according to Goal.com, Malaga are determined to hang on to the Euro 2012 winner and will demand at least £20 million for Cazorla – still £15.5 million less than the buy-out clause in his contract.
The La Liga club are in the midst of a bizarre financial crisis, which has left Cazorla and several other senior stars unpaid.
Despite being backed by a wealthy Qatari consortium, the La Rosaleda club have a lengthy unpaid tax bill and still owe Villareal £3 million of the £18 million they agreed to pay for Cazorla last summer.
Sources in Spain, however, are confident that Malaga’s owner, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Thani, is on the verge of clearing the club’s debts and resolving any outstanding financial issues.
Cazorla reportedly wants to leave Malaga over the wage dispute but suggested on twitter on Thursday that he was happy in Spain.
The 27-year-old can play anywhere across the front line or midfield and scored 4 direct free kicks last season, as Malaga finished an impressive fourth in La Liga.
It is understood that Wenger wants Cazorla to play a central playmaker role at the Emirates, rather than on the wing.
