Blues eye Swede as Cole’s understudy.
Chelsea could to set to make a shock move for want-away Blackburn defender Martin Olsson, reports the Daily Mail.
The Swede has demanded a transfer away from the relegated Lanchashire outfit, with his agent insisting he ‘will not play in the Championship’.
Sunderland, Stoke and West Ham are all thought to be interested in the Swedish international – but Chelsea have emerged as surprise contenders for his signature.
It is believed that the Blues want Olsson to be Ashley Cole’s understudy at Stamford Bridge next season and are eyeing a cut-price deal for the 24-year-old.
The European Champions also have Team GB star Ryan Bertrand on their books but boss Robbie Di Matteo believes he is more suited to a midfield role.
Cole, 31, is still first choice left-back at Stamford Bridge but was rested several times last year by Di Matteo and the Italian wants a capable back-up for the ageing England star.
Olsson would welcome the move to west London but Blackburn are demanding £4 million for his services, with Chelsea not willing to offer more than £1.5 million currently.
The Swede’s agent Martin Dahlin said: “It is true that Martin has submitted a transfer request. Of course, he would not play in the Championship.”
Olsson, who can also play on the left wing, has three years left on his Blackburn contract.
