Russians could beat Arsenal to midfield anchor-man.
Russian side Zenit St Petersburg are closing in on a surprise deal for Arsenal target Yann M’Vila.
The Rennes enforcer was linked with a move to the Emirates before Euro 2012 but Gunners’ boss Arsene Wenger reportedly pulled the plug on a deal after M’Vila clashed with his French international team-mates in Poland and Ukraine.
However, it is thought that Arsenal were preparing a fresh bid for the 22-year-old, who has emerged as one of the most talented prospects in Europe in recent seasons.
Zenit now appear to have stolen march on Arsenal, after coach Luciano Spalletti sent several scouts to monitor his progress at the European Championships, reports RMC Sport.
Wenger may now be forced into a bidding war with the wealthy Russians and Le Prof’s hand has been weakened by the news that pass-master Jack Wilshere will not return to action until October.
Rennes are thought to value M’Vila at around the £10 million mark.
Meanwhile, Zenit are stalling on a move for Arsenal winger Andrei Arshavin. The 31-year-old winger spent the second half of last season on loan at his former club but there has been no approach from Zenit to make the deal permanent so far this summer.
