Toon hang on to coveted striker.Newcastle United striker Demba Ba is set to remain at St James’ Park this summer after a £7 million release clause in his contract expired, reports the BBC.
Russian outfit Rubin Kazan plus Premier League duo Tottenham and Chelsea have all been linked with a move for the Senegalese striker but Ba has repeatedly expressed his desire to remain on Tyneside.
It is understood that Newcastle were powerless to prevent Ba speaking to other clubs if they triggered a £7 million release clause in his contract before the 31 July cut-off point.
Ba finished last season as Newcastle’s leading scorer with 16 goals but found the net just once after he returned from African Cup of Nations duty in February.
The 27-year-old was also overshadowed by his compatriot, Papiss Cisse, who arrived at St James’ from Freiburg in January and dazzled the Toon army with a string of stunning performances and goals.
Ba was reportedly unhappy at being forced to play on the wing to accomodate Cisse in boss Alan Pardew’s preferred 4-5-1 formation and his position has been further destabilised by Newcastle’s public pursuit of Liverpool striker Andy Carroll.
However, the striker is set to remain with the Toon for the coming season.
