Who needs RvP? City target £35m swoop for Real Madrid striker Higuain

Mancini is still desperate to buy the Arsenal star but with the champions seemingly his third choice, they are looking elsewhere

Manchester City are lining up a stunning £35million move for Real Madrid star Gonzalo Higuain.

City boss Roberto Mancini is currently locked in a three-way battle with Manchester United and Juventus for Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.

But executive Brian Marwood is championing a move for Argentine striker Higuain instead – which would still count as a sensational coup for the Premier League champions.

Unsettled Higuain has also been a target for Chelsea and Tottenham, but money-bags City have the spending power to blow them away.

Roberto Mancini seems determined to spend money this summer even if he has a huge squad chock full of top talents. Quite why the Man City boss would need extra firepower is hard to fathom but nonetheless the race is on to land Real Madrid goal machine Gonzalo Higuain.

Even though the 24 year old Argentine only managed 28 starts in all competitions, out of a possible 58, the prolific marksman still weighed in with 26 goals but still remains Jose Mourinho’s second choice striker behind Karim Benzema.

A move to the Etihad Stadium may tempt the former River Plate man, not least because he would hook up with fellow countrymen Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and Pablo Zabaleta. However it’s fairly possible that the French born forward would end up simply swapping one bench for another.

Mancini is unlikely to drop Aguero and clearly has a good relationship with the slightly unhinged, but hugely talented, Italian Mario Balotelli. Then there is the small matter of the aforementioned Tevez and Bosnian Edin Dzeko to contend with.
