St James’ Park side continue to chase French international.
Newcastle make fresh attempt to sign Mathieu Debuchy
Newcastle have made a fresh move in their bid to capture Lille full-back Mathieu Debuchy.
Press Association Sport understands the Magpies have stepped up their protracted pursuit of the 27-year-old defender, having so far not managed to persuade the French club to part with him.
Manager Alan Pardew had made the right-back one of his main targets this summer and will hope the latest offer will trigger a positive response.
Debuchy, an international team-mate of Yohan Cabaye, has indicated his desire to follow the midfielder to Newcastle, but having seen Cabaye’s value increase significantly since his £4.8million switch last summer, Lille are holding out for their valuation.
Reports in France have suggested they want eight million euros – around £6.3million – a figure way in excess of the Magpies’ initial offer.
Newcastle United have chased Mathieu Debuchy for the best part of two months but they still seem no nearer to landing the French international, who has made it abundantly clear he wants to leave Lille this summer.
The Magpies are looking for a new full-back as contract rebel Danny Simpson looks set to leave St James’ Park but thus far their offers for the French international defender have been turned down.
To be fair Lille’s insistence on receiving £6.3m for Debuchy, who impressed at the Euro 2012 finals, seems sensible. The price-tag seems almost a bargain in today’s transfer market and it may well be a price Pardew would do well to meet before another club looks to enter the race for the Ligue 1 man.
