Former White Hart Lane boss decides to spill the beans.
Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has warned Spurs fans to brace themselves for the departure of Luka Modric.
The Croatia playmaker has been the subject of transfer speculation for the second consecutive summer, with Real Madrid reportedly his likeliest destination.
Chelsea’s interest was rebuffed before last season and Modric went on to play a starring role for Spurs under Redknapp’s management.
But the latter warned that the 26-year-old’s excellence came at a price, with a promise to clear the way for a move away this year.
Real assistant coach Aitor Karanka recently praised the player in the Spanish press and Redknapp today said: “I would not be sure Luka would start the season at Tottenham.
“The club would be happy to sell if they get the right money. The chairman (Daniel Levy) said to him last year ‘Give us one more season and if Real come in, I won’t stand in your way’.”
One wonders why former White Hart Lane boss Harry Redknapp would want to make this revelation today. Clearly by making such a statement Tottenham fans are basically made aware of the North London club’s intention of selling Luka Modric being set in stone quite some time ago.
Perhaps Redknapp felt the need to ‘have a dig’ at his former club or perhaps he was just responding to a question in as honest a manner as possible. Either way it does seem likely that the Croatian international will leave Spurs but only once a club, be that Real Madrid or any other, meets Daniel Levy’s valuation of the schemer.
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas will hope that a deal to sell Modric happens sooner rather than later so that he has both the funds, and the time to spend them, on a replacement for the 26 year old.
