Emirates Stadium wide-man on Anfield radar.
The 23-year-old Theo Walcott is yet to conclude contract talks with Arsenal and the clock is ticking.
Although he is happy there he will be intrigued by the ongoing developments with Robin van Persie and the arrival of winger Santi Cazorla.
Arsene Wenger plans to give Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain a run in the middle also as he changes his shape a little for next season and Walcott will be hoping he fits in to the plan.
He has one year left on his contract and turns 24 in March but he could leave for nothing next summer.
Liverpool like Walcott and would be interested in making an offer. Their interest could also help Walcott’s negotiations.
SOURCE: Daily Mail
This source correctly points out that any interest in Theo Walcott could help the Arsenal winger to secure the Gunners contract he is after. It seems unlikely that Arsene Wenger would look to sell the 23 year old, even if he has proven inconsistent for much of his Gunners career, and as such a helpful hint that the England international is a wanted man could well play into the youngster’s hands.
Liverpool could well do with effective wide options after Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing both made a pig’s ear out of their debut seasons at the club but moves to capture the Arsenal man could prove fruitless. Without the carrot of Champions League to offer the former Southampton man, or indeed the prospect of a firm chance of doing so in the coming season or two, such a signing seems unrealistic.
The arrival of Santi Cazorla may well play a part in Arsenal’s thinking in relation to Walcott’s contract negotiations but the Spaniard isn’t necessarily going to cost him his place in the first team set-up. Ryo Miyaichi is probably considered too inexperienced to mount a charge for a regular spot this coming season and may even be loaned out again.
Andrei Arshavin didn’t join the club’s Asian tour so may well be on his way out and as this source points out, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain may be employed in a more central role, either way Walcott is probably still ahead of the youngster in Wenger’s thinking.
Walcott is yet to prove himself at Arsenal and has had ample time to do so and in many ways the coming campaign may be a defining one for the England international.
