Roma will sell De Rossi for right price.
Manchester City have been given encouragement in their pursuit of Daniele De Rossi after Roma director of football Walter Sabatini admitted his club would have to consider any eye-watering offers for the Italy international.
City boss Roberto Mancini is a long-time fan of De Rossi, and is thought to view the 29-year-old as the missing piece in his jigsaw puzzle at the Etihad Stadium.
De Rossi, who has spent his whole career at Roma, penned a new five-year contract extension deal earlier this year, but Sabatini admits the midfielder could leave if it was for the good of the club.
“He is certainly not for sale, but there are things in football that cannot be predicted,” Sabatini is quoted as saying in Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Roma cannot be detached from the reality that the movement of players may be necessary for survival – you see it elsewhere.
“If a team approaches us for De Rossi and proposes a figure where we cannot say no, we will sit around a table and talk about it. This does mean that he would then be sold, but it is a possible scenario.”
If anyone is capable of making Roma an offer they can’t refuse, then it’s Manchester City’s very own Godfather Roberto Mancini.
The Premier League Champions have been oddly quiet in the transfer market this summer, presumably while they struggle to offload the deadwood in their squad – the likes Emmanuel Adebayor, Nigel de Jong, Kolo Toure and Roque Santa Cruz.
But, despite pulling out of the race for Arsenal’s Robin van Persie, we get the feeling there is a big deal being planned at Eastlands and it could be the arrival of Italian enforcer De Rossi.
Mancini is a fan of his compatriot and the Italian tactician wants a player capable of covering at both centre-half and defensive midfield, something De Rossi proved at Euro 2012 that he is more than capable of.
With de Jong and Kolo Toure likely to leave the Etihad Stadium before the end of the month, De Rossi could cover the two positions without weakening City’s squad and also allow Yaya Toure the freedom to stretch his formidable legs further up the pitch, where he proved so devastating at the back-end of last season.
Another City target, Javi Martinez reportedly has his heart set on Bayern Munich, making De Rossi’s arrival all the more possible.
It will undoubtedly take big money for Roma to sell one of the club’s favourite sons but don’t put it past City to make it happen this August.
