Columbian arrives at San Siro but Damiao and Tevez will not join Milan this summer.AC Milan have signed Colombia’s Cristian Zapata on a season-long loan deal to shore up their defence after losing Alessandro Nesta and Thiago Silva, the Serie A champions said on Wednesday.
Milan have taken the 25-year-old from Spanish club Villarreal who were relegated from La Liga last season and have brought in former Sweden defender Olof Mellberg.
Zapata, who can play in central defence or at full-back, spent six seasons with Udinese before joining Villarreal, having started his career in his homeland with Deportivo Cali.
Milan’s signing of Columbian centre-half Cristian Zapata may be more significant Premier League transfer activity than it first appeared.
Comments from well-respected sources across the twittersphere indicate that Zapata’s arrival means the Serie A giants have now filled their quota of non-EU signings for the current year, meaning they will be unable to pursue their long-term interest in Tottenham and Manchester City target Leandro Damiao or sign City’s own Carlos Tevez, until January 2013.
Damiao, 23, has been tracked by the Rossoneri for some time but the Internacional forward, who has already scored six times at this summer’s Olympics and will lead the line for Brazil in Friday’s Gold Medal Match, is also wanted by Spurs and City.
While Kaka – another Milan target – holds an EU passport, Damiao does not but, as a regular in the Brazil national side in recent seasons, he would be unlikely to have a problem obtaining a work permit for a Premier League switch.
Tevez has linked with a transfer to the San Siro for the best part of a year but, like Damiao, the Argentine is a non-EU citizen so will be unable to move to Milan until January.
