Lambert wants reunion with Naughton but must sell Scot first.Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert wants to sign £5m-rated Tottenham full-back Kyle Naughton – but must first ship out Alan Hutton.
Naughton, 23, spent last season on loan at Norwich City under Lambert and the Scot is keen for a reunion with the former Sheffield United defender.
Spurs turned down approached from both Villa and Reading earlier in the summer for Naughton, as new head-coach Andre Villas-Boas wanted time to assess his new squad.
It is understood that the Portuguese rates the full-back but cannot guarantee him first team football in the face of competition from Kyle Walker and Benoit Assou-Ekotto and will listen to offers of around £5m.
Lambert, however, has been told he must sell before he can buy and will look to offload his unhappy compatriot Alan Hutton – himself signed for £4m from Tottenham last summer.
The 27-year-old has struggled to settle at Villa Park and was left out of Villa’s pre-season tour of the United States and did not play in warm-up matches against Peterborough and Nottingham Forest after being told he does not feature in Lambert’s plans.
The main obstacle to Hutton’s departure is the £30,000-a-week salary he earns at Villa, but Lambert is desperate to offload the right-back and sign Naughton as an upgrade.
Lambert has admitted he is unsure if Hutton will still be at Villa Park on September 1: “I don’t know, I’m not so sure.
“He’s shown a good attitude in training so there are no qualms on that front.
“I spoke to Alan before we went to America and it is the same as before. Nothing has changed really. He is training with the first team and doing everything right.
“I have no problem with Alan whatsoever and he knows that because I had a chat with him.
“There have been no inquiries for Alan – not at the minute.”
