Rodgers wants Spurs stopper if Agger joins City.
Liverpool have identified Tottenham centre-half Michael Dawson as the man to replace Daniel Agger – if Man City make a move for the Dane.
The Anfield outfit are demanding £22m plus Adam Johnson on loan for coveted centre-half Agger, with no indication yet if the Premier League Champions are willing to pay-up.
Red boss Brendan Rodgers is privately willing to sell Agger in order to raise funds to rebuild the Liverpool squad and believes that Dawson could be an astute signing.
It is understood that the former Nottingham Forest defender is happy at Spurs but new head-coach Andre Villas-Boas believes that his lack of pace makes him unsuitable for the high defensive line preferred by the Portuguese.
Villas-Boas is prepared to listen to offers in the region of £8m for Dawson, who has been with Tottenham since 2005.
The one-time England defender spent the majority of last season on the sidelines with first an ankle then a knee injury and has slipped behind Younes Kaboul, Steven Caulker and Jan Vertonghen in the pecking order.
There has been suggestion that Villas-Boas would hand Dawson the club captaincy at White Hart Lane, following the retirement of Ledley King but this now looks an unlikely, with a Scott Parker the former Chelsea manager’s preferred choice.
