Chelsea boss says England star has plenty to offer.Roberto Di Matteo has dismissed speculation that Daniel Sturridge is set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
Strurridge, 21, was reportedly unhappy at his bit-part role under the Italian and blamed his failure to make England’s Euro 2012 on his lack of game-time.
The former Man City forward, named in Roy Hogdson’s squad for next week’s friendly with Italy, has been linked with moves to Tottenham – to link-up with former boss Andre Villas-Boas – and Liverpool this summer but is set to stay at Chelsea after encouraging comments from Di Matteo.
“He is part of the squad, of the team, and still has a lot to give,” said Di Matteo of Sturridge, reports the Sport Review.
“He still has a lot to learn as well but we are hopeful he can develop even more and become a great player for us.”
Sturridge was part of Stuart Pearce’s Team GB squad for the Olympics and impressed, scoring a majestic lob against the UAE despite being diagnosed with meningitis just weeks before the Games.
“He did very well to recover from his illness in a short period of time. He is a very exciting player and it’s great for him to be involved in the England squad,” added the Italian.
“He has the ability to play in more than one position. He made it quite public he likes to play as a number nine but there is competition, which is good, and we will see as the season starts who is going to play.”
