Duo don’t feature in Portuguese’s plans.Tottenham’s new head-coach Andre Villas-Boas is set to tell David Bentley and Sebastien Bassong that neither player features in his plans at White Hart Lane, it has emerged.
Both Bentley and Bassong were marginalised under former boss Harry Redknapp but Villas-Boas, who replaced the 65-year-old last month, including both in Spurs’ pre-season tour of the USA.
It is understood that the 34-year-old tactician wanted to assess his entire first-team squad at close hand but has now deemed Bentley, 27, and Bassong, 26, surplus to requirements.
Bentley is Spurs’ record signing after arrival from Blackburn for £16.5m in 2008. The one-time England winger found life tough in north London however and was often left out of the team by Redknapp before being loaned to Championship side West Ham last season.
The right-sider made just 4 appearances for the Hammers before suffering a serious injury and returning to Tottenham.
Bassong arrived from Newcastle for £8m in 2009 and initially flourished, forming a solid partnership with Michael Dawson that helped Spurs pip Manchester City to the fourth Champions League spot in the 2009/10 season.
But the centre-half has gradually slipped down the pecking order and spent the second half of last season on loan at bottom-club Wolves.
It is understood that Villas-Boas will also listen to offers for Kyle Naughton, who is wanted by Aston Villa, and Jermaine Jenas, who is being eyed by West Ham and QPR.
