Stamford Bridge side target Serie A full-back.
Chelsea are lining up Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner after seeing their pursuit of No.1 right-back target Cesar Azpilicueta stall.
Jose Bosingwa has been released while Branislav Ivanovic, who can play right-back, is desperate to play in his preferred centre-half role.
Azpilicueta remains Chelsea’s first choice and the Spanish Under-21 international wants to move to Stamford Bridge, but the European champions are having to look at other options.
Lichtsteiner comes recommended and has been watched, and could be available for around £5m.

Chelsea are apparently turning to Juventus full-back Lichtsteiner following Marseille’s unwillingness to accept the West London side’s £5m bid for Cesar Azpilicueta but is there any reason the Turin side would accept the same fee for a player who is arguably worth a great deal more than the Spaniard?
Stephan Lichtsteiner is a very experienced and talented wide-man, who last season played an integral part in Juventus’s Serie A title triumph. The Swiss international spent three successful seasons at Lazio before making the move to join the Old Lady of Italian football last summer in a deal that is said to have cost the club around £7m.
Chelsea urgently need to bring in a player to fill the right-back slot and whilst Branislav Ivanovic can be used to fill the spot it would clearly be far more ideal for Roberto Di Matteo to have a player who more naturally fills the position.
28 year old Lichtsteiner spent three years with Ligue 1 side Lille before making his move to Serie A.
