Black Cats set sights on White Hart Lane forward.
SUNDERLAND are reported to be lining up an official bid for Tottenham star Jermain Defoe.
The Black Cats have turned their attentions to the England international after apparently being told that Wolves striker Steven Fletcher could cost them an astonishing £20million, including add-ons.
Boss Martin O’Neill is keen to bring in Defoe either on loan or on a permanent deal, reports The Journal.

Whilst Sunderland could dearly do with another striking option any chance to land Tottenham man Jermain Defoe would surely depend greatly on whether Andre Villas-Boas can land one or two forwards of his own. Currently the England man is the only recognised senior striker in his squad and efforts to bring in alternatives have come to naught thus far.
Efforts to sign Wolves forward Steven Fletcher have become increasingly pricey for the Stadium of Light side and whilst Defoe is older than the Scot he is far more experienced and would surely cost far less than the Molineux side is trying to extract for their striker.
The 29 year old England international was something of a bit part player last term but has impressive goal-scoring credentials having netted 195 goals from 333 starts over the course of a career that has seen Defoe turn out for West Ham, Tottenham and Portsmouth.
Martin O’Neill has successfully sold Asamoah Gyan but opted to not pursue Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner, despite his fairly successful season long loan spell at the club last term.
