Source suggests that Old Trafford side have secured the signing of the Emirates Stadium striker.
Arsenal will reluctantly sell Robin van Persie to Manchester United for £22million, according to reports.
The Gunners have been battling to keep hold of the Dutchman despite his refusal to sign a new deal but it is now thought Arsene Wenger does not want to keep an unhappy player in his squad and is ready to cash in.
United had been struggling to agree a fee with Arsenal, who were holding out for £25million, but reports now claim a compromise has been reached and Van Persie could be Old Trafford bound before the weekend.
Agreeing personal terms with the player will not be a problem and a four-year deal is already said to be in place so as long as a fee can be sorted out the deal will go through.
So there you have it.
This source believes a deal has been struck that would end perhaps the longest running transfer saga of the summer. Ever since Robin Van Persie publicly stated his unwillingness to sign a new contract the speculation has been rife that Arsenal would have no choice other than to cash in on the Dutch international this summer to avoid losing the 29 year old on a free transfer in a year’s time.
The departure of the Gunners skipper has clearly been planned for, with Arsene Wenger bringing in Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski from Montpellier and Koln respectively, to cover the goal-scoring shortfall.
Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is thought to have failed with previous bids for the former Feyenoord man but has now reached a deal with Arsene Wenger after talks between the two, who are on friendly terms. Such a deal would greatly strengthen the Old Trafford side’s attack.
Ferguson chose to offload injury prone Michael Owen and appears to have little faith in bench bound Dimitar Berbatov. Javier Hernandez has hit a run of average form. Danny Welbeck, though continually improving, is by no means prolific and may well work more effectively in a wide attacking role.
The Man United boss may well be looking to play Van Persie alongside Wayne Rooney, a mouthwatering strike partnership that would surely strike fear into any defence in Europe.
