St James’ Park side target Swedish forward.
Newcastle will face competition from Russian club Rubin Kazan to sign PSV Eindhoven striker Ola Toivonen.
The Tyneside club’s recent interest in Andy Carroll suggests that manager Alan Pardew is keen to recruit a new forward, and Toivonen is thought to feature on his list of targets.
As talkSPORT revealed in June, Toivonen is open to the idea of a move away from Holland after spending the last three seasons in Eindhoven.
Alan Pardew may well feel he could with effective attacking alternatives to Senegalese pair Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba and a move for Ola Toivonen would represent a sensible, cost effective way of doing just that.
The PSV Eindhoven man has been in good form since his move to the Eredivisie, finishing with 13, 15 and 18 goals respectively over the past three seasons. The powerfully built Swede could work well in the physical confines of the English top tier and Toivonen could be a good target man to play alongside either Cisse or Ba.
Rubin Kazan may well be able to offer the 26 year old a better wage but a move to the Premier League may tempt the former Malmo man.
Alan Pardew has been fairly sedate in the summer transfer window thus far but will surely be holding a decent transfer fund given last season’s successes.
