Youngster set for new deal at Nou Camp.
Liverpool target Cristian Tello is set to agree a new deal at Barcelona – but could still join the Reds on loan this summer.
The 21-year-old winger has linked with a temporary switch to Anfield, as boss Brendan Rodgers looks to add some much needed pace and creativity to his midfield.
Tello’s agent Josep Maria Orobitg met Barcelona officials today to discuss a new deal for his client, whose current contract expires in 2013, reports insidefutbol.
Barcelona are offering Tello a substantial pay rise and but cannot guarantee the wide-man first team football, making Anfield an attractive option for the winger.
Tello made a big impression for the Catalans last season, scoring twice from the bench on his Champions League debut against Bayer Leverkusen.
But the return to fitness of David Villa and Pedro’s fine pre-season form means Tello may be allowed to leave the La Liga giants on loan, with Liverpool leading the chase.
Rodgers admitted today that Liverpool were in contact with several other clubs and the former Swansea boss is hopeful of tying-up some new signings before the end of the month.
Rodgers told Liverpoolfc.com: “There has been contact and communication with the clubs. The team of people behind myself are working very, very hard in relation to those targets.
“We hope that within the next number of weeks those will bear fruit.
“The work has been continual right the way through to try and get in players that fit the profile of Liverpool and the team. Like I say, I would hope there would be a couple more signings before the end of August.”
