White Hart Lane side ready to bring in a replacement for Bernabeu bound Croatian.
Tottenham’s Luka Modric on way to Real Madrid for £26m plus add-ons
Real Madrid scent victory in their summer-long pursuit of Luka Modric and they not only expect to complete his signing in the coming days but intend to do so for rather less than Tottenham Hotspur’s £40m asking price.
Tottenham need the money to allow Villas-Boas to complete his squad. His priorities are a new striker and a replacement for Modric, with Porto’s João Moutinho and Yann M’Vila of Rennes prominent in his thoughts. Moutinho, though, may prove too expensive at €30m (£23.5m). Tottenham have had a bid of £12m turned down for M’Vila while they were unsuccessful with a €16m (£12.5m) offer for the more attacking midfielder, Gastón Ramírez, of Bologna.
So it appears that the long running saga is almost over. Real Madrid have been attempting to land Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric for some weeks now and this source believes a deal is in the pipeline and as such Andre Villas-Boas has duly lined up moves to replace the Croatian international.
£26m may be far less than Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy would have wanted to garner from Modric’s sale but it would appear to be crucial to secure such a sale whilst giving the North London club enough time to bring in an effective replacement.
Of the three players mentioned it is FC Porto’s Joao Moutinho who most resembles Modric. The Portuguese international adopts a similar controlled attacking midfield role as that of the outgoing 26 year old and he is a player that Villas-Boas knows well from his time in charge of the Estadio do Dragao side but as this source points out, he is perhaps the most expensive of those options available to the club.
Moutinho impressed at the Euro 2012 finals and has been instrumental in FC Porto’s back to back domestic title successes.
Yann M’Vila is perhaps a more defensively minded option and not one that Tottenham really need to consider given they have the likes of Scott Parker and Sandro on hand to do the ‘dirty work’. Also Rennes appear to have changed the goalposts a number of times in relation to valuation of their prized asset, as Arsenal found out to their cost earlier this summer.
Gaston Ramirez, a player who has apparently already been the subject of an official Tottenham bid, is a full on attacking midfielder, again of the sort Villas-Boas has in the form of Rafael Van der Vaart. The Bologna man has impressed since his move to Italy and is now the subject of much interest.
As a player Modric will be very hard to replace but Tottenham had little choice other than to cash in on a player who made it clear he wanted to leave.
One does wonder how the midfielder will fare at the Bernabeu as he will have to fight his way past top notch talent just to get into the starting eleven, let alone stay there. The likes of Kaka and Nuri Sahin are stuck warming the bench as Xabi Alonso and Mesut Ozil partner an enforcer, usually Sami Khedira, in the Real Madrid midfield so quite where Luka Modric fits into Jose Mourinho’s plans is anybody’s guess.
