The father of Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko has contacted an Italian agent to gauge Juventus’ interest in his son, according to Italian newspaper Tuttosport.
Although Dzeko made some decisive contributions to City’s title success last season, most notably scoring an injury-time equaliser during their 3-2 win against QPR on the last day of the campaign, he has failed to establish himself as a key part of manager Roberto Mancini’s plans.
Serie A champions Juventus have been relentless in their pursuit of a star centre-forward this summer, but they have yet to lure one to Turin, with previous targets Luis Suarez and Robin Van Persie proving difficult to capture.
And Dzeko’s father has handed Juventus a boost by informally suggesting that his son would be receptive to a move to Italy.
The Italian agent he contacted has informed him that Juventus are still monitoring the Bosnia international, and they could contact City to enter negotiations next week.
In an odd twist of fate, Manchester City, who missed out on Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, could sell forward Edin Dzeko to Juventus, who missed out on Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.
You have to feel for Dzeko. The Bosnian settled in the Premier League quicker than most, scoring 4 times in just his second appearance for City against Spurs. He went on to score some vital goals, including the all-important equaliser against QPR in City’s title-winning season finale and finished the campaign with a tidy return of 16.
And yet, he finds himself marginalised and unwanted by the Champions after just a year at the Emirates.
One of the perils of joining a mega-rich outfit like City is that you can be replaced at the drop of a hat and this is perhaps the reason why injury-prone 29-year-old van Persie didn’t fancy a switch to the Emirates.
It would be shame to see Dzeko leave England, as his ariel ability and physique make him ideal for the Premier League and he could flourish at a club like Tottenham or Chelsea – who both need a new striker.
England’s loss is likely to be Juve’s gain, if the deal goes through.
