US forward wants Liverpool switch.
Clint Dempsey has told Martin Jol that he wants to leave Fulham.
The American has been linked with a summer move to Liverpool, but the Reds are yet to make a bid.
It’s unknown whether the 29-year-old has handed in a formal transfer request but Fulham have used their official twitter feed to confirm that Dempsey wants away from the Cottagers.
The former New England Revolution playmaker has been dropped from Fulham’s squad to play Norwich.
A statement read: “Martin Jol confirms Clint Dempsey wishes to leave the Club.
Martin Jol said: “If we get the right price for Clint we will sell him. If not, he will stay. We have money to invest, but only in the right players.”
The way is paved for Clint Dempsey to finally move to Liverpool, nearly a month after the Reds’ US owners mistakenly claimed they had signed the Fulham forward.
Fulham boss Martin Jol has confirmed that all Liverpool have to do is meet the Cottagers’ asking price and Dempsey is theirs.
The problem is, Fulham value the 29-year-old at close to the £10m mark. After Kenny Dalglish’s disastrous spending spree last summer, the purse strings have been tightened at Anfield and Brendan Rodgers may have to sell before he can buy.
Liverpool’s desire to land Dempsey could be the reason Rodgers is entertaining the idea of selling centre-half Daniel Agger.
The Dane can leave Merseyside for Man City or Barcelona if either superpower offers over £21m and it is looking increasingly likely that Agger will be sacrificed, as Rodgers looks to boost Liverpool’s firepower up-front ahead of the new campaign.
