Arsenal opted to announce news of this deal seconds after the Gunners failed to score at home to Sunderland, which must not have gone down very well with fans of the North London club who are only just coming to terms with the sale of captain Robin Van Persie.
The 24 year old Cameroon international is primarily known as a defensive midfielder but last term finished as Arsenal’s top assist-maker and is a player that Arsene Wenger should perhaps have prevented from leaving the club. Unlike with Van Persie, who had just a year left to run on his contract, Song is still tied to the club until 2015 so there was no imperative to sell.
Having brought in Olivier Giroud, Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla one would imagine a fourth target is on the horizon as Arsene Wenger’s side lack a steely edge and without Song there are fairly few defensive midfield options left at the Emirates Stadium.
