Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wants new England keeper Jack Butland to be Pepe Reina’s long-term successor.
The Kop chief has made an official move for the young shot-stopper, who wore the Three Lions gloves for the first time last week.
Rodgers is willing to pay Birmingham around £7.5millon for Butland – and could even loan him back to Blues, who are fighting to keep the 19-year-old.

Brendan Rodgers has clearly been brought in by Liverpool’s American owners to oversea a long process of rejuvenation and as such the signings the Northern Irishman has made thus far, the captures of Fabio Borini and Joe Allen from Roma and Swansea City respectively, are with an eye to the future. Indeed the departures of Dirk Kuyt, Craig Bellamy and Maxi Rodriguez also display an intent to offload the club’s elder statesmen.
A move for England international Jack Butland then makes a great deal of sense as not only would it mean Liverpool would have in place a talented youngster to take over from Pepe Reina, and keep him on his toes, but would also resolve the current issue of not having an adequate back-up option in place. Both Brad Jones and Doni are not really up to scratch, both having already registered uncertain displays for the Merseyside club.
Butland only made his Birmingham City debut yesterday but clearly has the potential to be a big name and Lee Clark may struggle to hold on to the custodian though any move that would include a loan move back to the Championship side may well help get the deal done.
