St James’ Park side set for Old Trafford smash and grab.
Newcastle braced for bids for Tiote and Yohan Cabaye as Chelsea and Man Utd keep tabs
Boss Alan Pardew admits keeping onto both players would mean the Toon have had an excellent transfer window
Newcastle are braced for a battle to hang on to midfield stars Cheick Tiote and Yohan Cabaye.
Toon boss Alan Pardew admits that he and his staff are on “red alert” between now and the transfer window closure to try to fend off suitors.
European champions Chelsea are long-term admirers of enforcer Tiote, while Manchester United have watched both players regularly this year with the French Euro 2012 schemer Cabaye attracting particular attention.
Pardew is steeled for all eventualities. He said: “We are on our guard in case some really big bid comes in and we need to react because if someone goes out, another player will come in. But success for me in this transfer window would be losing none of our stars.”

It is perhaps a little surprising that Newcastle United have managed to keep hold of all the star turns who helped the Magpies secure a top five finish last term although perhaps the fact they have is a sign of the club’s obvious ambition. However this source believes that whilst Chelsea are keen on enforcer Chieck Tiote Man United are monitoring both the Ivory Coast international and French midfielder Yohan Cabaye.
Arguably both players could greatly improve Man United’s midfield but one would wonder if moves for the duo would be accepted by the St James’ Park side and a lot could depend on whether owner Mike Ashley is seeking to cash in on a player sale or two this summer, which is of course not beyond the realms of possibility given previous big name departures in the recent past.
Ferguson lacks an out and out defensive midfielder and has done ever since Owen Hargreaves suffered the first of many injuries some years back. Chieck Tiote could be just the man for the job as Man United have missed a steely presence in the centre of the park and the Ivory Coast international has more than proved himself at Premier League level following his move from FC Twente.
Yohan Cabaye could add more verve and creativity to the Old Trafford midfield which is more than just a little rigid. Paul Scholes has one more season in him and Michael Carrick is no spring chicken either. Darren Fletcher is only just returning from illness and Anderson faces a make or break season. Tom Cleverley has shown signs of quality but is still to prove himself on a regular basis.
The French international followed up and impressive Newcastle United campaign last term with a solid Euro 2012 display and the former Lille man could be tempted by a move to a club who can offer him Champions League football and the chance to challenge for major honours.
